31 % hike in Poverty Line in the Maldives in 2017

Reported poverty line has increased by 31% in the year 2017 according to the statistics of Islamic Ministry. The figure counts the numbers from Male city' and atolls. This suggests that living standards of the Maldivians had generally deteriorated to a substantial amount. However, the state remained solid in the introduction of new taxes and collection of these taxes.

The effective and equal distribution of tax revenues was doubtful long ago. The misuse of tax money has been a common habit by the politicians of the country.

31% hike also accounts the financial stress and pressures on people to live, mainly in capital city Male'. This also reflects dis-appropriateness in the salaries and monthly expenditure. Generally, it may reflect the inflationary pressures in the economy.

If the Poverty line hike year by year at this level, this may result a total bankruptcy of a country's citizen. I urge, government authorities to verify and validate the data and to take necessary actions at policy level after a research study.
