Turmoil in the Country – What is the best solution? My Opinion

According to the sources, it is said that the three-year democratic government had turned down with the resignation of the President Nasheed under duress and MDP, being the biggest political party criticizes the Opposition Leaders “Grabbing power” illegimately.  The MDP activists believe that a group of thugs, mainly being asylums of rich philanthropists of the country want to repeat the history and transferring the power to the consecutive 30 year ruled dictator Gayyoom.

Gayyoom’s regime is strongly be criticized by people of the country being autocratic, restriction of freedom of speech and expression and ruling for protection of family motives. Nasheed, with his advocates has been in exile in Salisbury, London for a number of months finding means in bringing down the Gayyoom’s government to establish a democratic government through a process of fair election. Today, for this reason Nasheed has been renounced in the globe as being the first ever democratically elected president of the country. Nasheed assumed office on 11th November 2008, with a manifesto, in benefit of the people, where now the country has seen lots of better transitions in various sectors of the political, economic and social system of the country. Three wings of the government has been separated with absolute powers vested in them, privatization policy and open market operation widened and the country moved  towards a better marketed-oriented economy increasing the wealth and economic stability of the nation. Though, challenges and pressures has been faced from stakeholders, Nasheed’s Government is able to implement a proper taxation policy with Free Medical and Health Insurance for all Maldivians through Aaasandha.

People believe these roads are unsafe
However, as I see, a coup on 7th February 2012 leads turmoil in the country in all ways. It is believed that the tourism sector of the country will hit badly due to concerns in internal security and scrutiny of the nation; indeed, some embassies have warned their travelers to Maldives at this juncture. Every cancellation of reservation is a loss for GDP of the country. It is heard from resorts that there has been great variations in their reservations trends due this and moreover, international press in on footstep to cover the recent political events happening in the nation.

Another significant issue is that of brutal actions of MPS and MNDF (armed forces) against the pubic violating basic principles of human rights leaving mass protests and bloodshed on the streets continuously and rather many believe the streets of male and islands are not safe. Several MPs have been arrested outside the law and they have been harmed by MPS. IPU  -Inter-parliamentary union is now on their way to Maldives to investigate this brutality towards the MDP MPs. President Nasheed, Maria , Reeko Moosa, Eva and others have been ransacked by the police and MNDF forces. Police integrity commission and human rights commissions has already expressed their deep concerns over with press notices.

President Nasheeds’ publicity is no where doubtful. However, Dr. Waheed ( as he claims he is the president), does not command any seat in parliament, any seat in local councils and secured only 9 votes in local council elections still talking formation of a unity government. How is this possible? In democracy peoples’ rule will prevail. MDP MPs, who has majority in the parliament  clearly stated that they will not cooperate with Waheed’s unconstitutional government. Male’ City council has declared that Waheeds’ government is unconstitutional and Addu Cirty Council, Fuahmulak, Kulhudhuffushi Council, with MDP councilors are not having any dialogue with Puppet Waheed.

Therefore, even though Dr. Waheed claims that he is in with Dialogue with MDP is unbelievable that any fruitful decision might be arrived. And Dialogue is not the best solution for the country but calling for a fair election with immediate resignation of Dr. Waheed will be the best solution for the country. There is great possibility that people of the country may go for a civil unrest if Waheed himself do not resign within coming weeks.

  1. President Mohamed Nasheed made a big mistake in taking Dr Waheed as running-mate Vice President. Dr Waheed was not a member of MDP, and so Waheed was not bound by the disciplinary code of Nasheed’s political party.

When Dr Waheed wrote on his blog that he was ashamed to be in Nasheed’s government, that was an announcement that Waheed was available to the Opposition and the Armed Forces.

Nasheed was overthrown, and Waheed took over. It all looks above board and legal. But it was not.

Dr Waheed was a Trojan horse. He was on a secret mission to overthrow Nasheed when the time was ripe.

Maldivian Army and Police, whose human rights violations have been famous throughout Maldivian history, have done it again.

Now, for the first time in our history, our Army and Police appear in the role of actually choosing our political leaders for us. They are making kings.

Nasheed was in an impossible situation. It was a miracle that Nasheed lasted as president as long as he did.

The Commonweath must suspend the membership of Maldives. India must support this stand of the Commonwealth.

Unless the Army and the Police are reined in, Maldives will not become a democracy.

  2. I guess it hss got to do with the insular culture - lovely sand, sunny weather, peace loving and tolerant people - all will become history if there is instability. People can have their own views but for the welfare of the nation they will have to agree for a consensus.
Independence, democrarcy, liberty, equality etal are all very lofy and ideal princples. In practice it is bound to throw up a lot of challenges and thorny issues.so, the need of the hour is acceptance of divergent views and becoming more tolerant and receptive to diffent views with ultimate aim of conserving Maldives as what it has been and what it ought to be ever - a splendid, serene safe haven.
